Of course Pieper and especially S&H were heavily involved in arms production, so they probably encounter some difficulties getting up and running with receivers. WW1 1917 Spandau Gew 98 Weimar 'Zn' Rework in 1927 in 8mm Mauser SOLD Description: This is a beautiful Weimar period rework of a WW1 Gew 98 Mauser made by Spandau in 1917. It is clear Pieper and S&H were late to get into production and didn't make the cut for actual Spandau assembly. I would have to check Mauser trends on the Pieper, but I am sure you are right. Legal Note All Gewehr98 rifles and Kar98 carbines were manufactured after 1898 and are therefore classified as modern. 1916 Spandau Stern Gewehr 1916 DWM Gewehr 98. Imperial Gew98’s will NOT have a blued receiver or bolt, and will all have the Lange sight. I agree the bolt is C/B, after checking my trends sheet this morning, the few known (shown) are C/B in 1917 and most of 1916. The exception to this rule is the Stern Gewehr with a Star marked receiver. Most S&H and Pieper's known are sterngewehrs, S&H make up almost all the Hannover jobs, I think I have discovered a couple exceptions, but almost all are S&H. Which reminds me, when i said k-block last known, that is confirmed, there are others reported, but as Danzig probably assembled (survive) in just as large numbers and are thoroughly scattered, they are probably Danzig's, though impossible to say from just reports.) S&H only show up in the later stages of production, actually the last two blocks known. Pieper doesn't show up in actual Spandau production at all. They are difficult to find in nice condition, probably harder than Simson/17, though both are the toughest of 1917 to find. not alot are recorded, add the odds of a matching bolt in that group and worse the likelihood of someone taking the angle good enough, it isn't good many examples will be available for comparison. You did a damn fine picture of the bolt bottom flat, but still can't make out the acceptance? I will check others to get a better feel, but can you make it out under magnification? I might not have another to compare it to. Hate the Berlin makers with their idiotic BC in front of the RS, only DWM and Spandau did this and there must be half a dozen that are either partially covered by the RS or hard to read being so close. (Pieper is rare wartime anyway, for whatever reason not many were used during the war.) After some research I have established the RR patterns to identify sub-contractor receivers from Spandau made, so I agree it is not Pieper or S&H. This is a very hard to get rifle, that it isn't sub-contractor is all the better. This is all deceptive though because a lot of Spandau/17 & 18's are out there, but very few were made or assembled by Spandau itself. Most 1917 makers are the most common, especially in upper grades, but not so for Spandau, damn hard to find, especially matching. Which makes them the lowest 1917 maker except for Simson in 1917. Very nice rifle! Very hard to find this year, - as I have stated before Spandau stopped making G98's in 1917, very early in fact, I am pretty sure the k-block was their last.
